Did you know that you can marry your sibling? Yes, it’s actually true, in Sweden you can marry adoptive siblings and half-siblings. If you want to marry your sibling, you need to apply for a special permit from the Tax Agency.

Before 1974, it was not the tax office that issued the permit to siblings, then it was the king who gave siblings dispensation to marry, reports The Gothenburg Post.

Can you have a child with your sibling?

But if you marry his sibling, does that also mean you get to have children together?

The government writes the following on his website:

“According to chapter 6, section 6, it is further punishable to have intercourse with one’s own child or its offspring or with full siblings”.

If full siblings have intercourse, it can lead to imprisonment for up to two years. The law says nothing about intercourse between half-siblings or same-sex full-siblings.

News24 have taken a closer look at how many siblings have married each other in the last ten years. According to information from the Swedish Tax Agency, it is very rare.

– Since 2015, it has happened on two occasions, says a case manager at the Swedish Tax Agency to Nyheter24.
