A month of fixed, prayer and Andling reflection have just come to an end.
Now the festival is waiting for Eid al-Fitr marking the end of Ramadan.
But what does it really mean – and how is it celebrated in Sweden?
After 29 days of fasting from, among other things, food and drink between dawn and sunset, the fasting month has ended for this year. Millions of Muslims around the world therefore celebrate one of the greatest holidays of the world religion.
The difference between eid al-fitr and eid al-adha
In Islam, EID is celebrated on two occasions – but for various reasons. The first, eid al-fitrinfocloseid al-fitr at the Swedish “Fastebreland’s party”.
The second, eid al-adhainfocloseid al-adhaps Swedish: “The sacrifice party”. The latter also coincides with the end of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, Hajjinfoclosehajjuts one of Islam’s five pillars and is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca that every believer is expected to do at least once in life if you have the opportunity.
How is Eid celebrated?
The Eid Day begins with a special prayer special for the holiday. Muslims are therefore gathered in the mosque or in prayer places during the morning to ask the eid prayer together and congratulate each other. It is recommended to take a bath, dress nicely and eat breakfast before it is time for the prayer. After the worship service, gifts are donated to the needy in the form of Allmosan Zakat al-Fitrinfoclosezakat al-Fitren type of alms paid before the EID prayer to ensure that the poor can also celebrate the holiday. “Zakat” is a pillars in Islam ..
Many celebrate by visiting relatives, friends and inviting to joint sessions. It is also common for children to receive gifts, so -called “eidi”. The traditions of the celebration may look different depending on the country and culture, but regardless of place, the holiday is characterized by community, joy and gratitude. Muslims around the world gather to pray, eat together, spend time with loved ones and remember Allah.
What does “Eid Mubarak” mean?
During the celebration, it is common to hear the phrase “eid mubarak”, which can be likened to saying “happy eid”. It is the Arab congratulations phrase, but the term differs depending on language – different countries thus have their own ways of wishing each other a blessed holiday.
As long as the celebration is ongoing
Eid lasts for up to three days, during this period it is forbidden to fast when the holiday is for celebration.
In 2025, EID al-Fitr falls on March 30, the date varies from year to year depending on the lunar cycle.
