New record, new takes
In an interview with British Top Gear, Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti, has confirmed that the French brand has the 500 km/h limit in its sights.
It was in connection with the new speed record for convertibles that the interview was conducted. The record is held by the Bugatti Mistral, which managed to reach a whopping 453.91 km/h.

Getting a car to go over 500 km/h is no easy feat.
To begin with, a car is needed that theoretically has that capacity. In addition, you must have a road where possible, but also tires that can handle the forces at that speed.

In order to obtain world record status, a car must be able to handle the speed in two directions.
Currently, Koenigsegg holds the official record of 447.19 km/h which was measured on a road in Nevada, USA.
The unofficial record is held by Bugatti, which reached 490.484 km/h in 2019.

Exactly when the new record is expected to arrive is unclear. That said, Bugatti has recently taken the wraps off the replacement for the Chiron, the Tourbillion.
With an 8.3-liter V16 engine that pumps out 1,800 horsepower, the performance is undeniably there.
Even Koenigsegg has plans to reach 500 km/h – the question is who will be the first.
