Östgötar can wake up to a white and messy Friday morning.

From midnight SMHI issues a yellow warning for snowfall.

At the same time, southern Scania steels itself for strong winds and storm surges.

It will be a wintry start to the weekend in parts of Sweden.

SMHI warns yellow for snowfall in northern Kalmar County, the northeastern part of Jönköping County, large parts of Östergötland County and the southern part of Sörmland County.

The warning is valid from midnight until 09:00 in the morning. It is expected to vary a lot locally, but in places there may be snow flurries of between 5-10 centimeters.

Morning commuters should be prepared for slippage, slush and poor visibility. There is a risk of delays in public transport and air traffic. Departures can be cancelled.

Windy – may become storm force

SMHI has also issued yellow warnings for strong winds in several places in Sweden during Friday until Saturday morning.

There may be wind gusts of 20-25 meters per second.

The warning applies west of Vänern, southern Halland, parts of northern Scania, southernmost and easternmost Blekinge and southernmost Öland.

“Not usual”

Southern Scania is preparing for storm winds of 25–30 meters per second and storm surge.

South Sweden writes that waves all the way from Russia are rushing towards the southwest coast.

SMHI has issued an orange warning for high water flows along Scania’s south coast, from Sibbarp to Ystad. There is a risk of major flooding.

During the night towards Saturday, the water level is expected to reach up to 155 centimeters.

In meteorological contexts it is called a storm surge.

– Yes, you can call it that. It is an accepted concept. It is not usual for such a high water level along the south coast, says Jörgen Öberg, oceanographer on duty at SMHI, to Sydsvenskan.

Municipality in crisis preparedness

Vellinge municipality is on emergency preparedness and has laid out flood protection. Staff are on call 24/7 now to monitor. Excavators, power plants and pumps are ready, reports South Sweden.

Several train lines in Skåne will be closed from 3pm on Friday. Among other things, between Svågetorp and Trelleborg/Simrishamn.
