With each passing year, more and more red snow appears in the Alps. The cause is a spread of an algae that has come to be called “snow blood”. Researchers are now working to find out what is causing the spread – before it is too late. “This area is melting right in front of our eyes, so it’s in a hurry,” says research leader Eric Merechal at Grenoble’s National Research Center.
