It is a radical decision to say the least, which will not please smokers: Italy is considering banning cigarettes in all public spaces, whether conventional or electronic cigarettes.

While the city of Milan had already decided to sanction the consumption of cigarettes in public spaces at the beginning of January, the government is now thinking of generalizing this practice. Cigarettes (classic or electronic) could soon be banned in the street, at the beach or in playgrounds.

All forms of cigarettes will be banned

If cigarettes are in the sights of the government, it is because they continue to attract new followers, in particular thanks to its “fun” variants: electronic cigarette and tobacco to be heated.

In fact, the authorities want to cut short this tobacco epidemic, by banning all cigarettes in public places, whether conventional or electronic cigarettes.

All open public places would be affected

The street, terraces, beaches, station platforms, bus stops or benches would thus be affected.

With this measure, the authorities would like to reverse the trend and reduce the number of smokers. Today, a quarter of the population says they smoke daily, and 93,000 people die of it each year, that’s almost 30,000 more than in France.”, warns Raphaële Schapira, France Télévisions journalist at the Rome office (Italy).

Another flagship measure of the Italian government: smoking rooms could also be abolished.
