The smoke from the wildfires swept over New York City earlier this month and settled like a cloud of fog over the city. Now the smoke has also reached as far as Great Britain, according to the country’s national meteorological service UK Met Office.
The smoke has traveled via the jet stream – strong winds in the upper atmosphere – meaning the smoke will not lead to poorer air quality on the continent.
“While the smoke is high in the atmosphere, it can create fierce sunrises and sunsets,” writes the Met Office on Twitter.
As the climate crisis escalates, scientists expect wildfires to become more severe.
