Smite build for Paladin is a tank, healer and DPS in one

Paladins have been one of the most popular classes since Diablo 2 at the latest and with the Smite build you can fully live out the class fantasy in Last Epoch. The build is particularly suitable for hardcore beginners, but is also a solid choice in the endgame. MeinMMO explains all the skills, passives, items and blessings you need for the build.

What kind of build is this? As a Smite Paladin, you don’t actually use the eponymous skill “Smite” directly. Instead, you throw hammers that circle around you and “smite” the enemies for you.

The build is a modification of Nova Hammedin, one of the best builds for paladins on the tier list, but is slightly weaker in terms of pure damage in comparison. But the build can withstand significantly more.

As a Smite Paladin, you are extremely robust and can withstand more than most classes, making the build a perfect entry-level build for hardcore players. In addition, with “Shatter” you have a skill that has always been considered absolutely iconic for the Paladin class. Ideal for class fantasy.

The build first appeared on maxroll.gg in English. We have translated and expanded it. You can find a similar build for Smite Paladins on LastEpochTools with a stronger focus on hardcore playstyle.

    Fleeting reversal

    You use these passives:

    Guardian (20)

The most important items, the best values and loot filters

The big advantage of the build is that you don’t necessarily need a unique or legendary item. This makes it much easier for you to find the right items. However, a unique amulet can help you significantly: Devotion.

Devotion increases your damage with Smite when you’re low on mana and has other stats that fit the build perfectly. Otherwise you should pay attention to the following affixes:

    Defensive:

    Offensive:

  • Critical hit chance with Smite
  • Increased throwing attack speed
  • Increased lightning damage (possibly fire damage in pure HC build)
  • You can find suitable loot filters here:

    Idols and blessings

Idols are a little harder to get for the Smite Paladin than the items, as you need the right huge idols (2×2 slots). You want to have 4 huge and 4 small idols with:

  • Increased chance to cast Knockdown on throw attacks
  • Increased chance of breaking armor with throwing attacks
  • Block effectiveness
  • Resistances, armor or stun chance as needed on small idols
  • Alternatively, you can play with 2 long idols (1×4 slots) if you want to forgo the hammers and use a fire takedown. Here you need increased duration on Seal of Hope and the chance of breaking armor with fire skills.

Your blessings change depending on whether you want more offensive or more defensive stats. Basically: In softcore you can place more emphasis on damage, in hardcore you should pay more attention to your defense:

  • The Black Sun: Void Hunger (offensive) or Mountain Strength (defensive)
  • End the Storm: Deep Mysteries (offensive with lightning damage) or Tidal Rhythm (defensive)
  • Reign of Dragons: Agony Mark (lightning damage) or Force Survival (defensive) or Human Resolve if you lack resistance
  • The Age of Winter: Eternity Bones (defensive)
  • Spirits of Fire: Embers of Immortality or Patience of Herkir
  • Fall of the Outcast: Curse of the Flesh
  • The Stolen Lance: Refuge Bonds
  • Blood, Frost and Death: Formosian Cruelty
  • Fall of the Empire: Survivor’s Memory or Eternal Shadow
  • The Final Ruin: Despair Refuge or Skill Knowledge
  • In our guide we explain everything about the blessings and how to get them.

    Tips and gameplay

Even though you skill Smite, you never actively use the ability. Similar to the unarmed Falconer build, your main ability is triggered by another skill: Hammer Throw, which is your main attack ability.

With the skill you let hammers circle around you, which then “smite” enemies and trigger additional lightning bolts, which in turn jump to other opponents. The closer you are to enemies, the more damage you cause.

If you play the hardcore build without hammers, you will use Warpath to trigger your other spells instead. The advantage of this is that your knockdown always affects nearby targets and potential healing does not go to waste.

You should always have 4 stacks of Seal of Hope on you to increase your damage and regeneration. Additionally, the Seal will help you keep your mana low if you play with Devotion.

Depending on your preference, you can use Sentence or Shield Storm as skills that allow you to move faster. Whenever you have too few enemies nearby or need to get to a target quickly, you use these skills.

Against particularly large groups, use Fleeting Reversal and Holy Aura to maximize damage and areas. By the way, if you want to learn a few tips, you shouldn’t do it in the leaderboard: Players warn in Last Epoch: Don’t trust the best builds in the leaderboard, they all lie
