SMHI’s warning – there could be snow chaos this weekend

The weekend looks to be a rather cloudy story in large parts of the country.
At the same time, SMHI has issued a yellow warning for snowfall in northern Norrland.
– The snowfall can occasionally be abundant and in total there can be around 10 to 15 centimeters of snow, says Linda Eriksson, meteorologist at TV4 Nyheterna.

During Saturday, an area of precipitation moves in over northern Norrland during the evening. SMHI’s warning is issued for an area that stretches from Gällivare in the north to Vilhelmina in the south. The warning applies from 21:00 on Saturday until 14:00 on Sunday.

– It is issued over large parts of northern Norrland’s interior, it is both rain and snow moving in during Saturday, says Linda Eriksson.

Before the area of precipitation moves in, however, there is a chance to catch some glimpses of sunshine.

– After a sunny start on Saturday, rain and snow are on the way, says Linda Eriksson.

Warns of problems in traffic

According to SMHI, the snowfall can cause problems in traffic due to slippage, slush and poor visibility. There may also be disruptions in the electricity and telecommunications supply. However, exactly where there will be snow within the warning area is a bit unclear.

– The snowfall can occasionally be abundant and in total there can be around 10 to 15 centimeters of snow. It is uncertain where the line between rain and snow is in the area and how much will actually fall, says Linda Eriksson and urges people to keep an eye on the warning, as it may be adjusted.

Except in the mountains, however, it is still autumn in the whole of northern Sweden.

– It has already snowed in the mountains and in the last week it has also snowed east of the mountains, says Linda Eriksson.

There is a chance for some sun in the south

The snow has not yet found its way down to the southern parts of the country, where it will be around 10 degrees on Saturday.

– In the southern half of the country, Saturday will start with haze and fog, then it will be quite cloudy with breaks, says Linda Eriksson.

Sunday also doesn’t look like there will be any stormy weather, even if there is a better chance of the sun peeking through the clouds.

– It will be hazy and foggy again, then it looks like it will break up a bit and become partly cloudy, says Linda Eriksson.
