SMHI warns of torrential rain

During Saturday, large parts of the country are expected to be affected by rain and showers, with a local risk of heavy rain in large quantities, according to SMHI’s latest forecast.

The Weather Authority has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain in Svealand, Östra Svealand, southernmost Norrland, Götaland and Västernorrland counties and Hälsingland.

– This is an area with heavy rains and showers over Götaland and Svealand and there may be partly thunder and partly locally large amounts of rain and torrential rain, says Katarina Andersson, meteorologist at SMHI.

Primarily it is expected to affect Götaland, and then from mid-day parts of Svealand.

Continuing north

According to Katarina Andersson, there may be from 10 to 40 millimeters of rain in some places covered by the yellow warnings.

SMHI has also issued orange warnings in several places, next to lakes and watercourses. This means a risk of flooding affecting buildings and roads. These include Hjälmaren and Eskilstunaån, parts of Dalälven, Siljan and Orsasjön.

– Traffic can be affected if the rain does not have time to run off, if there is a lot of rain in a short time, roads and basements can be flooded, she says.

During Sunday, the rain area is expected to continue north. The rain is expected to mainly affect southern and central Norrland, as well as westernmost Svealand, according to SMHI. However, the intensity of the rain will moderate.

– It can continue to arrive in large quantities in a short time, points out Katarina Andersson.

– On Sunday, it stops behind this rain for a while, so there may be some sun, she continues.
