Up to three decimetres of snow is expected to fall along the Norrland coast during Thursday and Friday.
SMHI has issued both a yellow and an orange warning.
Strong winds and heavy snowfall. People in the coastal area between Sundsvall and Kalix can expect it during the latter part of Thursday and during Friday. SMHI has issued a yellow warning for the entire area – as well as an orange for parts of Ångermanland and Västerbotten.
– You should bear in mind that traffic can go slower due to slippage and poor visibility, and that there is a risk of limited access on roads that have not had time to clear snow, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen, meteorologist at SMHI.
The snowfall is expected to move up over the country during Thursday, to increase during the night towards Friday. According to SMHI’s forecast, up to three decimetres of snow may fall in areas with the heaviest snowfall, spread over the two days.
– We have a rainfall area that moved in during the night towards Thursday. In Götaland and Svealand, that precipitation falls as rain, but in the height of Gävleborg County and Dalarna, the precipitation begins to turn into snow.
– At most, it can fall up to two or three centimeters per hour in the areas where it snows most intensively, Erik Höjgård-Olsen said on Thursday morning.
SMHI has issued a yellow warning also in the Lapland and Jämtland mountains, due to strong winds.
– It is about occasionally very strong average wind, above all on Calfjäll. I can imagine that there are many visitors in the mountains during Christmas and New Year, and it can be good to be aware that it can be windy, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen.
