SMHI: The first snow is falling here
Nyheter24 has again been in contact with the weather institute to find out more precisely where colder temperatures and even snowfall are first encountered this year.
The meteorologist Linnea Rehn Wittskog explains that it is primarily a matter of a change in weather that is now coming across the country ahead of the upcoming weekend.
– Before Friday, colder air will descend from the north over the country. Precipitation in the form of snow can already fall on the night of Friday in the mountain areas and northern Norrland. It will snow here and there until Saturday.
The temperature will drop to just 10 degrees in these areas. However, it is not enough for the ground to be colored white, even if not for a long time.
– Then it gradually gets colder throughout the country. On Saturday, Götaland may still have temperatures around 20 degrees, but in Norrland it will rather only be around 10 degrees. But during Sunday there will be clouds and rain from the southwest, which means that the whole country will get a change of weather and a generally colder temperature.

When the weekend is over, more or less the whole country will witness classic autumn weather. And in the northern parts, with a high probability, even more snow will fall.
– It is uncertain what it will be like next week, but a deeper low pressure looks set to come in during Monday, which will bring rain over the northern parts of the country where there may be an even larger area with snow patches. Then we’re still talking about Norrbotten county, but snow can also fall inland east of the mountains, says Linnea Rehn Wittskog.

It is not surprising that it snows in the mountains, not even in September. But the big question is when areas other than Norrland will see any snow. According to Rehn Wittskog, it can take quite a while.
– Historically, the first snow usually falls, then below northern Sweden, around October. In the southern parts of the country, we will probably have to wait until November, December before the snow can settle on the slopes.
In other words, depending on where you live, it could be all the way to December before you see any snow. But with a little luck and if the weather permits, it can happen sooner than you think.
