SMHI: Cold record of the century set in Vittangi

It was the climate station in Vittangi which after a break came in with a combined minimum temperature of -44.6 degrees. This new lowest quotation has been booked on January 5, 2024.

– Since it is a value from the regular measuring equipment, we have no problem approving it. It will thus be the lowest temperature in Sweden for both this month and the entire century so far, writes meteorologist Sverker Hellström on SMHI’s website.

“Order restored” – Lapland is cold

The previous cold record in the 2000s was from 2001 in Storbo in Dalarna. Now the record has been broken.

– You can say that order has now been restored with a station in Lapland as the very coldest, writes SMHI.

Cracked the climate station in Karesuando

SVT has previously reported that the climate station in Karesuando could not cope with the cold during the latest cold snap.

It gave up at minus 43.6 degrees.

– On good grounds, we can assume that it was even a little lower when it was coldest. But whether it was lower than in Vittangi cannot be said, writes SMHI.
