Smartphone app makes buying Oxford County bag tags easier

Oxford County is making it a little easier to buy the bag tags needed for curbside trash collection.

County residents can now buy the $2 bag tags through the Wasteline app on their smartphones, tablets or other handheld devices.

Through the app, the bag tags are available in sheets of 10 for $20, with an option to buy as many as five sheets at a time. Payment can be made through Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay or Google Pay while the tags are shipped via Canada Post.

Launched in 2015, the county’s Wasteline app helps residents keep track of garbage and recycling schedules, as well as special waste collection days. Residents can get automated reminders by text, email, smartphone or Twitter so they don’t forget to bring their trash to the curb.

The app also helps residents sort their recyclables, telling them “what goes where,” provides helpful tips and updates and lets users report any collection issues. The app is available for free on both Goole Play and Apple’s App Store.

The intent of the $2 bag-tag fee is to fund the cost of Oxford’s curtsied garbage collection program through its users. The approach helps reduce individual costs by “rewarding” residents who reduce, reuse, recycle and compost and have less to leave at the curb.

While the bag tags are now available to buy through the app, they can still be purchased online and at select retail locations throughout the county. For more information, including a complete list of retailers, residents can visit
