A so-called smart city no longer refers to the only technological prowess implemented on its territory. In the post-pandemic context of Covid-19 and in the face of the climate emergency, cities are proving to be “smarter” than others and better meet the expectations of their fellow citizens in search of well-being. These smart cities, or smart cties, are at the forefront of health issues and societal challenges.

Tomorrow more than two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. To support this population growth, our urban areas will need to become energy efficient. And rely on innovative lifestyles, architectures and technologies to meet the needs of their inhabitants in a sustainable manner.

Singapore tops the rankings Smart City Index 2021, which identifies the cities most involved in technology, but also in ecological, health and societal issues. The Asian city is ahead of Zurich and Oslo. So many cities which, according to their inhabitants, have perfectly managed the crisis of Covid-19 and tend to become resilient quickly.

The latest data collected indicates that environmental concerns are ultimately the strongest in towns relatively wealthy. More generally, access to a better quality ofair and more health services have become a priority since the start of the pandemic. Besides, the crisis linked to Covid-19 has dramatically changed the way big city leaders view the challenges ahead. In addition to the climate emergency, health-related factors are also becoming a priority.

To the light of the pandemic experience, it is therefore urban design and planning which must also be adapted to these new challenges to make them definitively resilient cities, in all areas.

Note that three French cities appear in the Top 50, including Lille, Bordeaux being the best ranked (32e), and that Paris only stood out in 61e position. Regarding North America, it is New York (12e) who is a good student. In the Middle East, it’s Abu Dhabi (28e); in Eastern Europe, Moscow (54e); in Latin America, Buenos Aires (98e) and in Africa, Cairo (104e).

The Smart City index is produced by theInstitute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (Sutd). This report classifies 118 cities around the world according to the perception of citizens of the way the technology can improve their lives, in addition to economic and social data extracted from the United Nations Human Development Index. The report surveyed 120 residents of each city in July 2021, or nearly 15,000 residents in total.
