The number of blue mussels on the West Coast has decreased significantly in shallow bays. Why is not yet known, but one suspected cause is climate change.
The purpose of now deploying farmed mussels is to try to repair the ecosystem. Mussels attach to rocks and each other and form mats on the sea floor, preventing bottom sediments from swirling around so that seaweed and eelgrass can grow.
The project is implemented by the marine environment project 8+fjords, which is run by the municipalities of Tjörn, Orust, Stenungsund, Uddevalla and Kungälv.
