Ukraine has said it will no longer allow gas supplies from Russia to Slovakia through its soil starting in early January.
Slovakia is considering countermeasures if Ukraine blocks the supply of Russian gas to the country, the prime minister of Slovakia Robert Fico says.
Slovakia is heavily dependent on Russian natural gas, which it has received through a gas pipeline running through Ukraine. Ukraine has said it will not renew the gas transfer agreement, which expires on January 1.
According to Fico, Slovakia will evaluate the situation after the end of the agreement.
– If we cannot avoid it, we will stop the electricity supplies that Ukraine needs during power outages. We can also end up with a different solution, says Fico.
