Slovakia: before the second round of the presidential election, press freedom threatened

Slovakia before the second round of the presidential election press

Slovakia is called to the polls again, Saturday April 6. This will be the second round of the presidential election. An election which will see the opposition candidate, the diplomat Ivan Korcok, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the former head of government, Peter Pellegrini, the candidate supported by the coalition of President Robert Fico. In the background of this second round, a very political issue. Brought to power only a few months ago, the presidential coalition quickly initiated controversial reforms, particularly in the areas of justice and the fight against corruption, but also the media. The government, last week, for example, presented a bill aimed, among other things, at being able to dismiss and replace the director of public radio and television. Its independence from the government is therefore under debate.
