Pieterse got off to a bad start. Literally, because she didn’t get into the pedal properly with her shoe and completely missed her start. The damage was limited, because she was able to keep up with the leading group. Fem van Empel, her main competitor for the World Cup title, drove away alone for a while, but Pieterse managed to join in the second round.
