According to the results of an American study, the quality of sleep would have an influence on the desire for success in the world of work among women. On the other hand, men would not be affected by this phenomenon. Explanations.
Sleep and professional success: what does the study say?
The world belongs to those who sleep well. Indeed, according to a study by the University of the State of Washington, the quality of sleep would have an influence on the professional ambitions of women.
To carry out their research, the specialists interviewed 135 full-time employees for two weeks. The experts gave the volunteers two questionnaires a day: one at noon and one in the evening. The questions focused on the quality of sleep the night before, their mood and their willingness to take on new responsibilities in their job. This made it possible to collect more than 2,200 observations.
According to the results of the study – published in the magazine Sex Roles, lack of sleep is found in all respondents, regardless of gender. The real surprise lies in the effects of poor sleep on the search for professional success. “Women more often reported lower intentions to seek better status at work the days following a night of poor sleep”presents the study in a statement published on Science Daily. Why a difference between men and women?
To explain this difference between men and women, researchers suggest “greater emotional reactivity and less regulation than men”, as well as cultural stereotypes portraying women as more emotional than men. On the contrary, stereotypes present men as more ambitious in professional success than their female counterpart.
“When women get a good night’s sleep and their mood is uplifted, they are more likely to be geared in their daily intentions towards achieving status and responsibilities at work,” says Leah Sheppard, associate professor at the Carson College of Business at WSU.
According to the expert, these results are good news. Women can influence the quality of their sleep and the management of their emotions with activities such as meditation. “There are many things anyone can do to get a better night’s sleep and regulate mood in general”concludes the specialist.
