Wijk bij Duurstede – It is becoming increasingly unsafe on the Dutch waterways. That is what Sunniva Fluitsma of the Algemeene Schippers Vereeniging says. On Friday afternoon, things went horribly wrong on the Lek, when a pleasure yacht was run over by a cargo ship. A 35-year-old woman was killed. What exactly happened there is still unclear. “So I can’t say anything about that.” But according to Fluitsma there is no question that more attention should be paid to safety on the water, especially now that it is becoming increasingly crowded. “Very often it almost goes wrong, and sometimes completely.”
