Sjögren’s new assignment: assistant coach

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Since 2016, Martin Sjögren was the national team captain for Norway. After his last mission – this summer’s EC finals in England – life has been football-free and mostly about recovery, reflection and family time.

Time that also led to something new.

The 45-year-old will be an assistant coach in men’s Allsvenskan IFK Norrköping.

“I’ve had a few offers from national teams but turned them down – it’s great to work in that environment, but there’s very little football and you have the players for a limited time,” he told the club’s website.

“I have missed the day-to-day work of working in a team and developing the game and players,” he told the club’s website.

The role will be his first in men’s football, after previously, among other things, leading LDB FC Malmö to two SM golds and Linköping to one.

“Woman or man doesn’t matter to me. Football is football, I want to work with a driven squad of players and it will be fun to work at the highest level in Sweden.”

IFK Norrköping’s sporting director Tony Martinsson:

“He has worked with some of the best players in the world on the women’s side and we believe he has a lot to contribute to our leadership staff.”

Glen Riddersholm is the head coach for the Allsvenskan club.
