The night trains between Stockholm and Narvik will be canceled on Sunday, SJ announces.
The decision is a consequence of the severe cold that prevails in northern Sweden, where temperatures are expected to drop below minus 30 degrees. The decision was made for safety reasons on the recommendation of the Swedish Transport Administration. Saturday’s departures were also cancelled.
– From Narvik downwards it is very exposed – if you think of Kiruna, the national border, Narvik and upwards, it is very inaccessible. There are no roads nearby, so if you had to evacuate it would be very difficult, says Leila Fogelholm at SJ’s press service.
This means that no trains on the route will depart from central Stockholm. During Sunday, SJ will receive new recommendations as to whether it is deemed safe to drive the routes during Monday.
On Saturday, SJ also decided to cancel all train traffic on the Umeå–Boden and Luleå–Kiruna routes for three days.
