During January, SJ canceled several departures, especially between the big cities of Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg.
On Tuesday alone, 28 trains are canceled from Stockholm central.
But the cold weather means that train traffic will also be affected during February, SJ announces in a press release. The fact that more trains need to be de-iced creates queues in the depots, while maintenance work falls behind.
– The reduction plan that applies as a result of snow and ice and that you simply need more time to de-ice the vehicles and have them in the workshop, says Dan Olofsson, press spokesperson for SJ.
It is mainly the long-distance trains that are affected, and according to Dan Olofsson, the tours have in most cases been canceled before it has been possible to book tickets.
– What we want to do is to ensure that the travelers can plan their journey in time if they are affected so that it does not become an emergency, says Dan Olofsson.
“Will learn lessons”
Affected travelers will receive information by text message and be given the opportunity to rebook or get a refund if the departure is changed.
What will determine when SJ will be able to run the trains as usual again is the weather, and the amount of snow that falls.
– Of course we will evaluate, draw conclusions and lessons learned from the period we are in now, and introduce improvements going forward, says Arvid Fredman, vehicle director at SJ in the press release.
