At least six people have died after a volcanic eruption in Indonesia, reports Reuters. The volcano Lewtobo Lakilaki, located on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, erupted shortly before midnight local time.
– After the eruption, there was a power cut and then it rained and there was heavy lightning, which caused panic among the residents, says Hadi Wijaya, spokesperson for Indonesia’s volcano authority.
Several nearby villages have been forced to evacuate. Lava and rock have hit several residential buildings around four kilometers from the volcano. At least 10,000 people live in areas affected by the outbreak.
The volcano has been spewing ash daily since Thursday that reached up to two kilometers into the air, AP writes.
Nine deaths were initially reported, but this was later adjusted down following updated information from local authorities.
