In a press release issued early Friday afternoon, Monica Hudon of SIU Communications said preliminary information suggests that at about 3:30 am on January 12, a Brantford Police Service officer observed a white van of interest at the service station. The officer called for assistance. There was an interaction between police and a man with one officer discharging his firearm several times.

A man was arrested shortly after. Although he was not injured, the man was taken to hospital.

“Even in cases of no serious injury or death, the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019, dictates that the discharge of a firearm by an officer falls with within the jurisdiction of the SIU,” Hudon explained.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Brantford Police said early Friday afternoon that officers on patrol observed a suspicious vehicle occupied by a lone male in the parking lot of the gas station.

“When officers approached the vehicle to speak with the driver, there was an interaction and an officer on scene discharged his firearm,” said BPS communications manager Robin Matthews-Osmond. “The man fled the scene in his vehicle. Officers quickly located and arrested the accused at a Roy Boulevard location.”

Brantford Police said the accused is not a resident of Brantford.

No injuries to officers or the public occurred.

Evidence markers could be seen delineating a circular path from the Fairview Drive side of the property where tire tracks can be seen in the grass, toward the opposite side of the station where a fence surrounding garbage bins has been damaged.

The gas station is closed for the investigation.

The SIU urges anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at siu.on.ca/appeals.php
