SIU looking at early morning Brantford incident

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is hoping to hear from witnesses to a Thursday morning incident on Marlene Avenue where police fired a ‘less-lethal’ firearm at a 33-year-old man.

The man, who was apparently armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself, was hit with some sort of projectile device such as a bean-bag round, said the SIU in a media release.

The SIU said the man was uninjured but police are required to involve the agency if a firearm that’s capable of causing serious injury or death is used by officers.

The 1:50 am incident involved an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield that was shot at the man, allowing officers to apprehend him. He was then taken to hospital.

The SIU now asks anyone who might have information about the investigation, especially video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at www.siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

The SIU is considered an independent government agency, charged with investigating police and some special constables, in incidents that have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or a firearm discharged at a person.

The SIU director will decide if any criminal charges should be laid, or whether a file can simply be closed.
