SIU investigating after man crashes into cruiser and more

A man chased down by Brantford Police on Saturday was taken to hospital for treatment, triggering an investigation by the province’s Special Investigation Unit.

Police said they were called about a suspicious vehicle in the intersection of Market and Gray Streets on Sept. 2 at about 4;10 am

They found a man was unconscious in the front seat of the vehicle but, when he woke, he began to drive off, colliding with a police cruiser, a parked vehicle and a fire hydrant.

The man left the vehicle and ran away on foot but officers were able to locate and arrest him on West Street, said a media release.

A search of the man’s vehicle turned up about 52 grams of suspected cocaine, said police.

Police charged the man, who is a 41-year-old Brantford resident, with two counts of dangerous driving, flight from police, eight counts of driving while prohibited, failure to comply with a release order, resisting arrest, causing a disturbance and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The man had injuries that required a trip to the hospital so Brantford Police notified the Special Investigations Unit, as required, meaning BPS will not release further information on the incident.

The man was held for a bail hearing.
