SIU ends investigation into woman’s arrest in Brantford

The province’s Special Investigations Unit ended its investigation into the December 2023 arrest of a 40-year-old woman in Brantford.

The woman was arrested by OPP officers on Dec. 18 for breaching the terms of a release order. She was taken to the OPP detachment and subsequently transported by Brant Brantford paramedics to hospital with symptoms of fentanyl withdrawal.

The woman was diagnosed with a broken arm while at the hospital.

The SIU determined the woman’s injury occurred prior to her arrest. As a result, the woman’s arrest did not give rise to a “serious injury” according to the SIU’s mandate and the investigation has been closed.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct police officers, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at to person.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
