Jannik Sinner advanced to the top sixteen at the US Open by sweeping his way by Christopher O’Connell set 6–1, 6–4, 6–2. Big advance favorites for men’s singles Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have fallen from the continuation before, but Sinner, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, did not give O’Connell a single break point.
– I knew I had to play very confidently. My serve worked really well and I’m very happy with my performance, said Sinner.
Sinner hit 15 passes. He next faces 14th-ranked Tommy Paul.
– There have been some surprises in the tournament, so let’s see what happens next. I’m happy I’m still involved and I want to play as many matches as possible, Sinner said.
With the eliminations of Djokovic and Alcaraz, the only former US Open winner still in men’s singles is the Russian Daniil Medvedevwho defeated the Italian by Flavio Cobolli 6–3, 6–4, 6–3. Medvedev will next face Portugal Nuno Borges.
In women’s singles Iga Swiatek easily advanced to the fourth round by knocking out the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6–4, 6–2.
– I like evening games, but it’s noisy here, so I have to focus on my work and stay in my bubble, Swiatek said.
