Alfred Jesse Smithas Wood was called before taking his stage name, was born in Louisiana in 1941 and moved to Los Angeles as a youngster.
The artist’s career began in the early 1960s and he had his breakthrough in 1967 with the singles “The oogum boogum song” and “Gimme little sign”. He continued to record music throughout the 70s and 80s, but without much chart success.
