“My high school days were the best,” said Leanne Abbott MacDonald as she put the final touches on decorations at the Simcoe Legion hall.

“I get emotional just thinking about it. Everyone at that school was so welcoming and friendly. We’re excited about reconnecting with old friends, making some memories tonight.”

After spending five years at the school, MacDonald and her co-organizer, Amy Ban Service, especially recalled the excitement of Fair Day when “the whole school” would go to the fair, said MacDonald.

“I was a cheerleader and it was nerve-wracking performing on the gravel in front of five huge schools. Today felt just like Fair Day again when I woke up – I had those butterflies..”

Service cheered through high school and went on to cheer at McMaster University where she eventually coached the cheer team.

“Coming from a small school where there were only two classes, SCS seemed really big,” Service said.

“The cheer-leading competitions were a huge deal – we would go to the Ontario Provincials in Toronto every year – and there were proms and going to Grade 13.”

The evening featured food trucks, the band BlankSpace, Delhi DJ Black Creek and a portion of the ticket sales supporting Simcoe Special Olympics.

The two said, if all goes well, they hope to bring the former students back on a regular basis for meetings. A crowd of 150 to 200 was expected on Friday.

“At least 100 of my best friends will be here,” MacDonald said with a laugh.
