Silina takes over in Latvia

“I believe in Latvia and the potential of the people. Thank you to the saiema (parliament) for showing confidence in my government,” she writes herself on X, formerly Twitter, after being approved by a vote of 53 to 29 on Friday.

Silina succeeds Krisjanis Karins, who chose to submit his resignation after cooperation difficulties in the coalition government last summer. However, he continues to have a role in the new government, but now as foreign minister.

Silina, 48, will become the second woman prime minister of Latvia, after Laimdota Straujuma, who ruled from 2014-16.
