A sea drone that is silently controlled by a fin instead of a noisy propeller.
– – Njord means that one can achieve dominion over the seas, says inventor Thomas Jemt, who with development support from NATO will soon put the drone in production in Sweden.
Thomas Jemt has spent many hours in Kolmården’s dolphinarium to observe how dolphins use their fins. Now there is a functioning product that copy the dolphin movement – the sea robber Njord.
It can be used both civil and militarily.
The seafarer may be used to take water samples in the Baltic Sea or to attack enemy vessels from below with torpedoes.
Military use
The development of lakes for military use has been rapid since Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Many warships in the Russian black sea fleet have been lowered with the help of Ukrainian Sjödröare, who sound and be visible and thus reveal themselves.
The development of Njord has been substantially accelerated since Thomas Jemt’s company Dolprop Industries was adopted in NATO’s Diana program for innovation of the defense industry.
-Of 2600 companies in the 32 NATO countries, 74 were selected for help with development and finally production. We are one of five Swedish companies that now receive that help, says Thomas Jemt.
The Defense Materiel Administration, FMV, has at an earlier stage measured the sound created by the Sjödröaren Njord. The results show that Njord is quiet underwater. This means that it cannot be detected by the ship’s sonar system either.
Wanted to find alternatives
Originally, Thomas Jemt wanted to find an alternative to propeller operation of vessels because the right propeller sounds in water interfere with the environment for both the mammals of the sea and other living beings.
Now, 15 years after the idea of being able to operate vessels with fins that are dolphin -like, the product is Njord about to become a reality.
