Windows 11 is the victim of a problematic bug that causes high CPU usage even for the simplest tasks. Microsoft is currently testing a patch to resolve the issue.
Windows 11 is supposed to improve the performance of PCs running on Windows 10. But in practice, things are quite different, and many users have complained. Several reports from Microsoft’s Feedback Hub report that computers experience performance drops and system slowdowns, including when performing simple tasks, such as file transfer or recording capture. After further research, it turns out that the bug seems to be integrated into Windows 11 itself since the problem is still present even after a so-called “clean” installation of the operating system – when the installation of Windows 11 is made from scratch. It is therefore not a third-party application that modifies the behavior of the processor.
Windows 11: a performance problem soon fixed
The problem is believed to be with the Shell Infrastructure Host process – also known as sihost.exe. This basic component of Windows allows the proper functioning of several important elements of the operating system, such as the Start menu, the taskbar or the transparency effect of windows. Since the problem comes from Windows 11 itself, the only solution is to reach for a fix from Microsoft.
The publisher is currently working on it, since it has just deployed the KB5016700 update in beta for members of the Insider program, a test program allowing you to try the versions of Windows under development before the final version is released. made public, free of charge (see our practical sheet). As the firm announces on his blog, this update contains fixes and improvements exclusively, including about this process issue, without adding any new functions. If Microsoft did not acknowledge the origins of the problem in its release notes for update KB5016700, simply describing it as “an issue that in some cases causes sihost.exe to use a large amount of CPU”, However, the problem seems to be solved. The patch should soon be available for all users on Windows 11.
