Significantly fewer new arrivals are assigned to municipalities

A total of 3,300 new arrivals are proposed to be admitted to the country’s municipalities in 2023, which can be compared with the previous assessment of 8,200 people.

The reason for this is primarily the government’s announcement that the number of quota refugees will be reduced to 900 people next year.

“But one reason is also that we see that fewer asylum seekers who have been granted a residence permit need to be assigned compared to what we assessed in August,” says Jens Carlander, an expert at the Migration Agency’s national operational department, in a press release.

Since 1 July, the municipalities have also been responsible for arranging housing for people from Ukraine who have received a residence permit in accordance with the mass migration directive. These instructions take place through a separate distribution and apply in addition to the instructions for new arrivals according to the Settlement Act.
