There is significant avalanche danger in the Abisko and Riksgränsfjällen, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s website Avalanche forecasts. This means a third on the five-point risk scale.

“Sunny weather, fine snow and many people who like to ride in steep terrain can be a dangerous combination. We know that the snow is weak in many places and that it is possible to start dangerously large avalanches,” the website says.

The risk level means “dangerous conditions”. In the current area, leeward slopes and terrain that has been leeward – such as ravines and depressions – are considered to be the most dangerous.

The advice is to avoid driving scooters and skiing in flatter terrain. Furthermore, people are advised to be “very careful when choosing where and how you ride”.

The warning is currently in effect until 6pm on Sunday.
