Sidaction 2024 is launched! This awareness and fundraising event for the fight against the AIDS virus is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Today, 35 media partners remain faithfully committed to the association to help highlight the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In its new call for donations campaign, Sidaction underlines that the association has never stopped fighting against the AIDS virus since its creation in 1994. Several generations of volunteers, researchers, associative actors and donors have mobilized to fight HIV. Thirty years later, the victories achieved in the field of research against the virus must be honored but the fight must not stop.

AIDS in 2024 in a few figures

Today, 630,000 people die of AIDS each year in the world and there are 1.3 million new infections. It is estimated that nearly 6 million people, including more than 24,000 in France, are unaware of their HIV status. As for prejudice and discrimination against people living with HIV, they are increasing in a worrying manner.

In a survey carried out by the IFOP for Sidaction:

    • 44% of French people would be uncomfortable if they learned that the person looking after their child(ren) was HIV positive.
    • A third would be uncomfortable going on vacation with someone who is HIV positive.
    • One in 4 people would be uncomfortable if their work colleague was HIV positive.
    • 31% of 15-24 year olds surveyed would refuse to talk to those around them about their HIV status, with, among these, 41% refusing to do so out of shame.
    • More than a quarter of young people think that an HIV-positive person on treatment could represent a danger to others.

    Screening must become a reflex

Among young people who report having multiple non-regular partners, 45% of them claim not to systematically use a condom during sexual intercourse and 42% not to have had a screening test in the last 12 months. An alarming figure given that screening and condom use are two essential tools for controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Furthermore, 36% of 15-24 year olds do not know where to go to get tested and 39% of them are unaware of the existence of emergency treatment if a risk has been taken with HIV.

Screening must become a reflex for everyone. “These results are still worrying because they reflect risky behavior in the face of the AIDS virus. It is necessary to provide information on means of prevention and to normalize the use of screening, which remains the only tool for knowing one’s serological status. Remember that a person who is screened and put on treatment quickly will remain in good health and will no longer transmit the AIDS virus.” declares Florence Thune, general director of Sidaction.

Three days to fight discrimination, support patients and research

Sidaction will therefore meet us on March 22, 23 and 24, 2024 for a new unique weekend of mobilization! This media time remains necessary to talk about HIV/AIDS and counter preconceived ideas and false information that still circulates far too much in our society. Three days of mobilization to support people living with HIV and combat the discrimination they still face in 2024. Three days of fundraising to finance scientific research and hope, one day, for a world without AIDS.

10 goals to end the AIDS epidemic

    1. Combat discrimination and stigmatization of people living with HIV.

    2. Develop a one-shot treatment that will definitively control the virus.

    3. Identify an HIV vaccine.

    4. Maintain active scientific research, by promoting the engagement of young researchers.

    5. Make existing treatments accessible to all people living with HIV in the world (among them, 9 million do not currently have access).

    6. Know your HIV status and take a screening test at least once in your life, if not regularly (24,000 people are unaware of their HIV status in France).

    7. Reduce the number of new contaminations (more than one million per year), by encouraging the use of prevention methods and increasing their access to all audiences.

    8. Provide education in schools on emotional, relational and sexual life for all, from a very young age.

    9. Fight against social inequalities which hinder access to prevention and care, particularly for the most vulnerable and most exposed people.

    10. Encourage collaboration between all those involved in the fight against AIDS, in the associative, medical, scientific and political fields, in close collaboration with the people concerned.
