Sick of the difference – it’s so much more expensive to have a dog than a cat

Sick of the difference its so much more expensive

Nowadays, it is popular for many families to get pets. Of which dogs and cats are two of Sweden’s most popular. But is having a dog or a cat more wallet-friendly? Agria have found out in a new survey whether it is more expensive to have a dog or a cat.

How much does a dog cost per month?

There are several factors that affect how much a dog costs in operation. News24 have talked to Pernilla Melander which tells some crucial points that can make the cost go away:

  • How much it eats.
  • Fur care and clipping.
  • Breed-specific health problems.
  • Insurance premium and veterinary visit.
  • She says that larger dogs with breed-specific health problems are the most expensive, while smaller and healthier breeds are cheaper.

    – The pet owner’s expenses can vary during the animal’s life. Often there are more expenses at the beginning of life with puppy classes, basic vaccination programs and various types of equipment such as baskets, transport cages, leashes and food bowls. If the animal is in need of veterinary treatment, the cost increases during a certain period, Patrik Olsson at Agria.

The survey shows that most dog owners, 45 percent, pay between SEK 1,000 and 1,999 a month for their dog. At the same time, about a third, 34 percent, pay less than SEK 1,000 a month.

A pet that is significantly cheaper to own is a cat. The survey shows that a clear majority, 58 percent, of cat owners pay less than SEK 1,000 a month for their pet.

    – The average cost difference between owning a dog and cat depends on several factors. Cats eat smaller portions than most dog breeds. They do not visit the vet as often as dogs and thus have lower insurance premiums, says Patrik Olsson.

That’s how much you save by having a cat

When Nyheter24 takes a closer look at what the insurance costs for a cat, it amounts to a maximum of SEK 161 a month, with Agria. When Nyheter24 previously looked at the insurance cost for larger dogs, it could amount to a staggering SEK 1,987 a month.

This means that you can save up to SEK 1,826 a month by having a cat instead of a dog.
