At a time when a new beauty trend is igniting the social network TikTok, an expert wanted to be heard. Indeed, the concept “everything shower”literally translated as “full shower” has accumulated over 600,000 views on the platform. It would be a viral movement presenting a 360 degree hygiene routine. Cleaning, exfoliation, hair removal, hydration… Everything goes! The idea is to take care of yourself, in one shower session, through an exhaustive ritual, as if you were spending several hours at the spa. But dermatologist Mamina Turegan has her opinion on the matter: “Spending prolonged periods in the shower can increase the risk of dryness or irritation of the skin.”
Not to mention, showering for too long or too often can disrupt your microbiome and damage your hair. Deanne Robinson, also a dermatologist, specifies: “It all depends on your skin, the products you use and your lifestyle. You may need to shower more often if you exercise regularly or are exposed to allergens or toxins outdoors. But if you’ve had a relatively slow day, there’s a good chance you can skip the shower step and have one the next day.” So, showering 3 to 4 times a week would be more than enough.
A shower that is too long and too hot can be harmful to your skin. In fact, it will tend to become red, irritated and dry. On the hair side, these will appear frothy and rough. This is why it is recommended to wash with lukewarm water, for 15 minutes maximum. You will benefit from its soothing, relaxing and rejuvenating side while activating your blood circulation.
