MeinMMO editor Dariusz is actually looking forward to the ONL of gamescom 2024. He is expecting exciting announcements.
The Opening Night Live (ONL) of gamescom 2024 starts on August 20th at 8 p.m. The event is usually filled with tons of trailers for new games or updates. Often, new games are presented to the world for the first time or upcoming players receive new announcements.
For the first time in years, as a shooter expert, I have hope that there might be a big announcement for us too – there are clues. And if I’m wrong about my expectations, at least you’ll have something to laugh at and say: “That fool actually had hope.”
Gamescom 2024 is also an important event for us. You can watch the ONL stream with us from Webedia, i.e. GameStar, GamePro and MeinMMO, for example. There will also be our big FYNG show on August 22nd at 5 p.m. with exclusive material on over twenty games. You can find out more about the show here:
Stress tests, closed demonstrations and more
My guess that there must be at least one announcement is based on the events of the last few weeks. Several promising games have opened their doors.
Spectre Divide, the upcoming tactical shooter from shroud, first had a small stress test for the servers, then a closed beta started shortly after. I think we could soon find out a release date, an open beta or at least a release period. A stress test for the servers only makes sense if a large rush of players is expected in the near future.
In Diablo 4, for example, there was the so-called server slam just under a month before the game was released. Although Spectre Divide was only recently introduced, the developers have been working on the shooter for two years.
Then there is Splitgate 2, which was also newly announced. After the announcement, a video appeared in which (ex) professionals and content creators played the shooter’s classes and presented them. On August 21, shortly after the ONL of gamescom 2024, an alpha playtest is also scheduled to start on Steam.
In the video with the pros, Splitgate 2 also looked like it was already quite far along in development. The only year we know for the release so far is 2025. So maybe we’ll see a new trailer with more gameplay or even a more concrete release date.
Waiting for release dates and CoD Next
Thirdly, we’ll talk about Delta Force: Hawk Ops. The shooter with the Battlefield modes is currently running an alpha test. Here, too, we’re waiting for more detailed information about the release. I would also like to see a gamescom trailer for the extraction shooter Beautiful Light – after all, the game should be released in 2024. The tactical shooter ALARA Prime, which is supposedly coming in 2024, would also have to slowly boost its marketing if the F2P title is actually to be released this year.
And even if it should be obvious: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is still available. On August 28th, the big event CoD Next will take place, where they will present the upcoming spin-off in detail. So it is likely that there will be another trailer shortly beforehand.
Little hope for PvE shooters
I currently have less hope for fans of PvE or single-player shooters. Ashfall, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater or the next Doom could show something. The same applies to the dinosaur shooter Ferocious, which at least says on Steam “Planned release date: Upcoming announcement.” Maybe we’ll also see STALKER 2, which recently postponed its release again. But I don’t have much hope for that.
I’m pretty sure there will be a trailer for Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2. The co-op shooter started advertising a few weeks ago and is preparing for release on September 9th. I don’t see a big announcement coming for the Warhammer shooter, but I’d still like to see a new trailer.
Personally, I would really appreciate a release date or further beta phases for shroud’s tactical shooter Spectre Divide. I had and continue to have a lot of fun in the open beta. You can read more about my impressions on MeinMMO: Spectre Divide is already the best PvP shooter of 2024 in the beta – that’s why the new game is so much fun
