Ankara Education and Research Hospital Pediatric Surgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğuş Çalışkan said that they were told about the baby’s condition when a 10-month-old baby girl suddenly started vomiting at home.
Çalışkan, who stated that the mother noticed that the safety pin of the prayer pin attached to her baby’s collar was missing at this time and that the family immediately went to the emergency room, shared the information, “In the chest X-ray taken in the emergency room of our baby, we saw that an open-mouth safety pin was blocking the upper part of the esophagus, which is the narrowest part. This was causing our child to vomit and not be able to feed. We immediately took him to the operating room and removed the safety pin with an endoscopy procedure performed under anesthesia.”
Çalışkan, who emphasized that this is not a simple procedure as it is described, and that the open tip of the safety pin swallowed by the baby made it difficult to remove surgically, said, “During this procedure, there could have been a tear in the esophagus, bleeding and serious life-threatening situations. But we performed the procedure successfully, everything is fine now, our baby can feed.”
“IF IT HAD ENTRY INTO THE TRACHEL, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS, LIFE-THREATENING RISK”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çalışkan, drawing attention to the risk of swallowing objects attached to babies, said, “We were able to quickly remove the safety pin from our baby, but if it had gotten stuck in his trachea, very serious life-threatening complications could have occurred.” (AA)
