Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead in Nara, Japan, where he gave his election speech last Friday. The details that emerged in the investigation into Abe’s murder were surprising.
Attacker Tetsuya Yamagami testified that he believed it was Abe’s grandfather, former prime minister Nobusuke Kishi, who first brought Soka Gakkoi, a religious group his mother blames for its bankruptcy, to Japan.
THERE IS NO EVIDENCE
Authorities conducting the investigation focused on the possibility that the suspect may have targeted Abe’s grandson because of his grudge against his grandfather. Although it was discussed in the Japanese press that Kishi, who was the prime minister between 1957 and 1960, took part in the establishment of a political structure related to the religious group in question, it was stated that there was no evidence that Abe’s grandfather was the name that led the group to start activities in the country.
