After the sinking of the Moscow cruiser, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, on April 14, Novaya Gazeta, owned by Russia’s Nobel Prize-winning journalist Dmitry Muratov, conveyed the research it conducted on this incident to its readers.
In the news, which included the interviews with the families of the Russian soldiers on the Moscow cruiser, it was reported that the mother of a Russian soldier on the cruiser met with her son after the incident and said, “Before going to the Moscow cruiser, they signed a confidentiality agreement. I can’t tell you my son’s tenure information. I am scared. Believe me, I am very afraid. I have to think about my son’s safety. My son called me on April 15th. ‘Mom, I didn’t think there would be such a mess at a time like this. I cannot describe in detail what I saw. This was so scary. 40 people died and a few disappeared. There are many injured. Many of the injured were amputated. There were big explosions.”
“MINISTRY OF DEFENSE DOESN’T WANT TO ACCEPT DEFENSE OF UKRAINE”
Also in the news, the mother of the Russian soldier said, “I don’t know how to wait for my son. I am so afraid. Why don’t they tell all the facts through the press? Because the Ministry of Defense does not want to accept the defeat of Ukraine,” he said.
“27 PEOPLE MISSING FROM MOSCOW CRUSHER”
The news, which also included the statements of the relatives of other sailors on board the Moscow cruiser, shared on the Russian social media site Odnoklassniki that Varvara Vakhrusheva’s 41-year-old wife, Ivan Vakhrushev, died in the attack on the Moscow Cruiser. In his post, the deceased soldier’s wife stated that she was called from the Russian army command and was informed about the death of her husband, and that she received information that 27 Russian sailors were also missing.
“My SON IS ON THE LIST OF LOST”
The news included the sharing of Dmitry Shkrebets, father of Yegor Shkrebets, who was on the warship and shared on another social media sharing site, VK. Stating that his son is missing in the Shkrebets post, he said, “My son Yegor Shkrebets was conscripted from Yalta (Crimea) last July 2nd. Later, he started to serve as a cook and supplier on the Moscow Cruiser in the Black Sea Fleet. A tragedy occurred on the night of 13-14 April. All crew were reported to have been evacuated. This is a lie. “According to the information given by the Moscow cruiser commanders, my conscripted son is not among the dead and wounded, but on the list of the disappeared,” he said.
RUSSIA PASSES QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WARSHIP
While the discussions about the flagship of the Russian navy, the Moscow cruiser, are still continuing, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov, who made a statement after the ship’s sinking, was hesitant to convey precise information. Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not hold a meeting about the Moscow cruiser and will not go to the Crimea to conduct investigations. When asked about what happened on the warship and whether there were casualties, Peskov did not comment, using the phrase “This is a matter of the Russian Ministry of Defense”.
UKRAINIAN CROSSER SUGGESTED HIT WITH NEPTUNIAN MISSILES
The Ukrainian side claimed that it had hit the Moscow Cruiser with 2 Neptune missiles 46 kilometers off the Snake Island in Ukraine. Russia denied the Ukrainian side’s claims of hitting it with a missile, announcing that the ship was damaged as a result of an explosion of ammunition and sank due to weather conditions when it was towed to the port on April 14.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the soldiers on the ship were evacuated, but did not share information on the number of dead and wounded.
