Shirin: “The hacker’s SMS ended up in the chat with my friend”

An unpleasant message was sent from Shirin’s number to her friend. The text ended up in their ongoing conversation, but it wasn’t Shirin who had sent the message.

– It can be difficult to understand that a completely fraudulent text message suddenly enters the conversation. If it is about threats, there can also be more serious consequences, says Lotta Mauritzson, crime prevention officer at the National Fraud Center at the Swedish Police Agency.

Police warning: Be a critical thinker

It is not illegal today to send SMS in someone else’s name. However, the police are aware that fraudsters are using the technology.

– The police reports we receive are often about fraud. That you have text messages from your real bank in a conversation, then the fraudsters’ text messages come into the same thread. It means that you, as a person, lower your guard, says Mauritzson.

– Always double check if there is something that feels odd or weird in your stomach when you receive messages digitally and do not trust exactly what is written.

In the video above, Shirin tells how the SMS chat with the friend was hacked.
