After Robert Downey Jr. left the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers 4: Endgame, there was great hope that the Hollywood star would tackle Sherlock Holmes 3 as his next film. For over ten years fans are waiting for the sequel. So far, however, shockingly little has happened.
Although its Guy Ritchie-directed predecessors, Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows (2011), exceedingly successful at the box office were, the production of the third part has been struggling with starting difficulties for years. However, director Dexter Fletcher is adamant that the story will continue.
Sherlock Holmes 3 with Robert Downey Jr. is far from off the table
Fletcher, who recently caused a stir in cinemas with the Elton John biopic Rocketman, gave an update on Sherlock Holmes 3 in conversation with Collider.
Specifically he says:
The pandemic has [Sherlock Holmes 3] thrown off course. I do think it will be done. It just has to be done. I don’t know what the exact timeline is for that, but it should happen. It’s about being the right people in the right place at the right time.
Sherlock Holmes 3 would not be the first film to fall apart due to the corona pandemic and now has to be painstakingly put back together. While Fletcher doesn’t provide any specific information, it’s reassuring that someone else has passion about the project speaks.
He concludes his Sherlock Holmes 3 speech with the following words:
The appetite [auf die Fortsetzung] is huge and I’m sure there are some people who are aware of it. [der Film] should definitely be done because it’s brilliant. I really hope it happens.
However, an official cinema release for Sherlock Holmes 3 has not yet been determined.
