Halla Tómasdóttir will be the new president of Iceland, according to the public service company RÚV.

The votes from Saturday’s election have not been fully counted, but challenger Katrín Jakobsdóttir, former Prime Minister of Iceland, has admitted defeat and congratulated Tómasdóttir on her victory.

– I know she will be a good president, says Katrín Jakobsdóttir.

55-year-old Tómasdóttir is a businesswoman and came second in the 2016 presidential election.

Iceland’s president has a largely ceremonial role. Outgoing President Guðni Jóhannesson is very popular but announced in his New Year’s speech that he will not stand for re-election.
