She thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was a “bodybuilder pretending to be an actor”

Actress Linda Hamilton first landed the role of Sarah Connor in the 1984 action film Terminator. Years later, she shared that she initially didn’t want to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In 1984 the first Terminator film was released in the USA. During the shoot, the two actors Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor, and Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger met.

In the new Netflix documentary Arnold, which revolves around the life of the Terminator actor, the actress went even further on what was on her mind about the project. The Terminator didn’t really convince her:

It was really just another job. I didn’t think it was particularly much more than other scripts I had read. I mean really clueless. It was a very low budget and we were all fairly new to it. I definitely had my doubts.

She also labeled the leading actor at the beginning: “According to our snooty definition, Arnold was a show-off. A bodybuilder pretending to be an actor.”

However, she changed her mind while watching Arnold Schwarzenegger on set: “But because I was curious, I went to the sidelines and watched Arnold, and I bought it. The physicality and the stiffness and all the things he did.” She then thought that maybe the whole project could work after all. And it should.

In the end, Terminator became an absolute success. The film’s estimated budget is around $6.4 million. The action film managed to gross more than $78 million worldwide (via imdb). Several sequels to the saga followed over the years.

2019 saw the release of the latest installment in the action film series, titled Terminator: Dark Fate (2019). Hamilton and Schwarzenegger slipped back into their cult roles as Sarah Connor and Terminator.

Another colleague didn’t like Arnold Schwarzenegger for a long time. However, Sylvester Stallone and the Terminator are now friends. This was also evident in the honor given to Bruce Willis:
