Having the right nose and taking risks are two valuable skills of successful filmmakers: inside. And nobody was more successful and braver with this strategy last year than director Coralie Fargeeat.
Fargeat did not stop believing in her film The Substance-even during considerable financing difficulties in corona pandemic, or after universal Hollywood satire Lied over sexism and youth craze like a hot body horror potato.
The substance director Coralie Fargeeat leaned Marvel-Blackbuster Black Widow from the courage of the filmmaker paid off and The Substance was given five Oscar nominations. For example in the categories Best film, the best director and best leading actress for Demi Moore, who celebrated her big comeback with the Hollywood grotesque. Variety then dedicated Fargeeat to a detailed portrait, in which it is also mentioned that it even the lucrative Marvel offerBlack Widow to turn with Scarlett Johansson, rejected. (The film was finally shot by her colleague Cate Shortland.)
Coralie Fargeeat remembers the huge resistance of her brutal vision, which she apparently considered more necessary than a Marvel adventure:
During the filming of the film and in the difficult post -production phase, I captured it as everyone wanted me to be less violent, less excessive, less bloody, less frontal make. […] And I knew that the film to do justice to the story I wanted to tell, everything has to show so that people, above all, feel it without censoring themselves. The substance became the best horror film of 2024
The result, as disgusting and under the skin, can be seen in all its monstrosity. The Moviepilot editorial team even chose the substance in 4th place in the best films 2024, which for us defacto Best horror title of last year might.
