At the celebrity special of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? In June 2014, Günther Jauch asked a tricky 500,000 euro question. Namely, what the GDR washing machine WM 66 was used for besides cleaning. To generate heating electricity? Canning fruit? Vacuuming or listening to Western radio? Bosbach was at a loss and called Merkel. Unfortunately she didn’t answer the phone.

A second attempt by Bosbach to dial also ended in voicemail. Within the next few minutes the then Chancellor reported via text message. “Ok whatever it was, best regards,” she wrote, according to Handelsblatt.
Unfortunately, it was already too late for Bosbach. The politician and then chairman of the Interior Committee preferred to leave the show with a secure 125,000 euros. Merkel might have given the right answer given her origins: GDR citizens also used the 66 World Cup to preserve fruit.
